Power Rangers Legends for iOS

Power Rangers Legends has been released on Apple’s iOS. And it includes Z-Putties!

The game is a screen-swiper in the style of Infinity Blade (so I’m told; I’ve never played Infinity Blade). You, as either the MMPR Green Ranger or MMPR Pink Ranger, square off against enemies one at a time, mostly trying to counter, block, or dodge their attacks so you can, as a result, land your attacks. There is only the MMPR quest line available to start, but the game shows grayed out lines for Samurai and Lost Galaxy Rangers and villains to appear.

I’m a fan for the fact that the game includes Z-Putties, but that’s just me. I enjoy the detail they have given to rangers and villains alike, even though some weapons don’t quite make sense (like the fact that the Z-Putties have weapons at all). Visually, for the platform it’s on, they’ve done a great job. They even use audio from the series. (Even though the Green Ranger has Jason’s voice. Oops.) For a Power Rangers game, they could have done a lot worse.

But they also could have done a lot better. Combat is clumsy and hard to get used to, mostly because the techniques they teach you don’t actually work. You dodge one way and still get hit. Countering an attack is near impossible, to the point that knowing someone who’s actually done it even once is amazing. You’re given a limited number of blocks, which is mind-boggling. You lose battles against lone Z-Putties armed with swords.

It’s not a stretch to say that the game is a quarter-eater, to borrow a phrase from the era of arcades. Surely, Saban wanted kids to lose at this game, then spend Mommy and Daddy’s money buying revives. Power Rangers is, after all, a glorified toy commercial, and this game is just another toy, with the added benefit of appealing to the older, nostalgic MMPR crowd.

I may give it a few more goes but, for me, outside of trying to get screen caps of Z-Putties, the game has no replayability. The controls are just too frustrating to really enjoy the game.
